"Critical Consumption"

by: Shamaim Noor

When I finish a truly life-altering piece, I scramble to find the author's details. Where did they get educated? Who do they look up to as writing aspiration? What was their progression through the industry? What hobbies do they cultivate? It is a sort of envious, gluttonous, greed to absorb their minutest details. Narcissistically, I yearn to have any likeness to the person who fashioned and presented such fineness into my life – even if it is as simple as their favourite genre. So - not to presume I would hold any such significance in someone’s life – I have laid out the necessary information to know me outside of my work.

I am in year 11 – which, if you have not had the misfortune of yet encountering, I can only warn you of. I consider myself a literature enthusiast, despite my absolute absence of professional qualifications supporting this and assured lack any of required knowledge. The one qualification I am certain I wield, though, is the amount I read. Annually, my reading goal is 100 books. Equally, I consume other media like it will cease to exist – which, for all we know, it could. Films (short or long), visual art, video essays - you name it, I devour it. Within my friend groups, I am regarded as somewhat of a popular culture expert. In other terms, I am chronically online. At any given moment, I could launch into a tirade about the latest feud, film adaptation or scandal. Just as passionately, I spontaneously spout lengthy monologues about the social and political state of the world. I am a born fashion aficionado and adore dissecting its cultural, social and aesthetic bearing. The key takeaway? I’m unnervingly infatuated with scrutinising anything my mind latches onto until it is reduced to fundamental concepts. Who can really tell if that is a red or green flag? I have decided to share my ever-spurring opinions of the events in popular culture. I will break down my current obsessions in media, discuss my thoughts on key events happening now and generally attempt to encourage a critical consumption of pop culture. So, dear reader, I hope – despite its inevitable pitfalls, errors and cliches – my work spurs some modicum of thought or impression in your life.
